Defying thedoom scroll.

I’m ditching the endless cycle of complacent, media consumption and creating things that spark delight instead of depression; asking questions instead of adding to the idle echo chamber; finding actionable ways to rebel, resist, and make good trouble (as John Lewis would say).

I’m dumping the doom scrolling and using illustration and design to delightfully defy.

Yep, I wanna defy too

Being Delightfully Defiant is breaking rules with a smile.

The "rules".

These are four of the stories that have been sold to us for generations as truths, as fundamental social principles that are both necessary and inevitable. These are the silent laws used to divide, degrade, and distract us — to keep us complicit — so a small few can take without restraint or resistance. These are the rules I’m breaking.

Different is dangerous

This fabricated fear is the backbone of racism, homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia, ableism, and every other system used to oppress those who check any boxes outside of the majority.

Money matters more

When the bank accounts and portfolios of the rich are prioritized over our environment, our futures, our welfare, and our lives, then paper and numbers on a screen matter more than anything, including us.

A woman's value is in her "femininity"

If we’re too distracted trying to contort ourselves to fit an “approved” definition of woman that minimizes and quiets us, we won’t resist or fight back as our real power is taken away.

Mother Nature is a commodity

When we’re detached from the immensity, complexity, and beauty of the natural world, allowing it to be reduced to its tangible resources and their monetary value, then it’s easier for greed to exploit, consume, and destroy it.

The art here is free.

Not the transactional “free” that’s really just an incentive to snag your info or sell you something. It’s the regular, old-fashion free.

There are a lot of very big, very real, and very overwhelming problems in the world, and idly waiting for everyone else to fix them while I scroll my phone isn’t an option. I don’t have lots of money to throw at solutions to these problems, I’m not built to be a leader or revolutionary, and pulling “a Luigi” isn’t exactly my style — but what I can do is art. I can make things that inspire, provoke thought, and, hopefully, make my small corner of the world a little more delightful (and defiant).

But to do so, this art needs to be accessible, you need to be able to actually get to it and use it, none of which can be done behind a paywall. So, at the bottom of every blog post I’ve added a button that lets you download the artwork so you can print it, share it, and use it. That being said, I’m definitely not cool with people taking advantage, so I’ve written some do’s and don’ts for using this free art on my FAQ page.
